Install Astraios
Every installer is small. It creates a private Python environment, detects your GPU and downloads the matching PyTorch build (about 2 GB for CUDA), so there is no Python setup and no manual CUDA install. Get the files from the latest release (v0.1.25-alpha).
| Platform | File | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 x64 | Astraios-Setup-<version>.exe | Run it. Detects an NVIDIA driver and installs CUDA 12.8 PyTorch, otherwise CPU PyTorch. Unsigned: SmartScreen may warn. |
| Linux x86_64 | install-astraios.sh | bash install-astraios.sh. Installs under your home directory, no root, no system Python. Fedora, Bazzite, Ubuntu, Arch. |
| Linux, portable | Astraios-<version>-x86_64.AppImage | chmod +x and run. PyTorch is provisioned per user on first launch. |
| macOS 11 or later | install-astraios-macos.sh | bash install-astraios-macos.sh. Creates Astraios.app; Apple Silicon runs on Metal, Intel Macs on the CPU. |
| Developers | git clone + Poetry | Python 3.11 to 3.14. Install a CUDA build of torch first for GPU use. |
Which GPU is used
Astraios picks CUDA, then Apple Metal, then CPU, automatically, and prints the device in the log panel at startup. AMD and Intel GPUs are not accelerated. Set ASTRAIOS_FORCE_CPU=1 to force the CPU. Large images are processed in tiles so 4 to 8 GB of VRAM is enough; on a CUDA out-of-memory error the operation falls back to the CPU.
CI-tested versus verified by people
Hosted CI runners have no NVIDIA GPU, so the table separates what CI checks on every packaging change from what a person has confirmed on real hardware. Reports from real machines are collected through the compatibility report form.
| Platform | Checked in CI | Verified by a person |
|---|---|---|
| Windows x64 | Installer, PyTorch, app launch (CPU build) | not yet reported |
| Linux x86_64 | Installer end to end (CPU build) | Maintainer: NVIDIA RTX 5060 Laptop GPU, CUDA 12.8, Bazzite |
| macOS Apple Silicon | Installer, Astraios.app, Metal backend, Metal-vs-CPU pixel parity | not yet reported |
| macOS Intel | Installer, CPU path | not yet reported |
| NVIDIA CUDA | Not testable on hosted runners | Maintainer's machine only |
Updating and integrity
Astraios checks GitHub for a newer release at startup (Preferences > Updates to turn it off) and can download the installer for you. Releases built after publish a .sha256 sidecar per asset; the updater verifies against it, and you can check by hand with sha256sum -c or Get-FileHash.
Troubleshooting
- Expected CUDA but the log says CPU: update the NVIDIA driver and run the installer again.
- Linux desktop entry missing: log out and back in.
- Anything else: open an issue with the log panel output, or read docs/installation.md.
